The Land of the Rising Sun is exotic, soothing to the soul, body and senses. Matsuo Bashō is the creator of the Japanese poetic form haiku, derived from haikai no renga – humorous songs. Bashō rejected humor in favor of impressions, emotion and contemplation of nature. He composed his poems at social gatherings and noted his impressions in verse in his diary.
