For many years, “Lolita” was considered a scandalous novel, and the author had trouble getting it published. Nabokov claimed that he was inspired to write it by a newspaper report about a monkey from a Paris zoo who, as part of a scientific experiment, was given drawing supplies. The first thing the animal sketched were the bars of its cage.
